Othello, Pete & Papa (OPP Show) – Episode One
While working at WJFK many moons ago, I became good friends with Othello, the producer who worked the shift before me. Through the years, we’ve often talked about doing something […]
On the way in to the station to record this episode, co-host Pete and I heard REO Speedwagon’s “Keep On Loving You” pop on the radio. Because being a superb wealth of useless trivia is one of my skills in life, I explained to Pete that the song, despite seemingly super romantic lyrics, has a hilarious backstory: Lead singer Kevin Cronin found out his wife was banging around on him, and he wrote this song to state that, despite that, he’d stick around (I find very bad things funny).
We figured we would start off the show discussing the tune, but got so very much more when Pete booted up the video and we learned what an absolute masterpiece of unintentional creepiness and hilarity it was. Sure, we planned to do a bunch of things this episode. Assist UNICEF. Tap dance live. Get my cats to meow the word “cookie.” Instead, we pissed away 45 minutes discussing a song from goddamn 1981 and doing it so well you’ll ask for seconds. You’re welcome, America.
