So Nate Dogg is dead at the age of 41. Is it racist that I just assumed he’d been shot? Turns out, Nate’s been battling health issues for a few years, including two massive strokes in 2007 and 2008. What is it with non-elderly black singers and strokes? (I’m concluding this based upon the deaths of Luther Vandross and Nate Dogg and literally no one else. Hey, any chance to mash together my love of celebrity deaths and racial stereotypes is making Reese’s as far as I’m concerned.)
To the kids out there who didn’t experience much of Nate Dogg’s music because it’s a little too “old school” (a fact that makes me feel fresh as a trilobite fart), the beauty of it was he would sing the filthy words that everyone else on the track would just rap. It’s one thing to hear Snopp Dogg spit a line about busting a nut in a girl’s face while watching the Raiders game; that’s par for the course. But to hear Nate Dogg actually croon it was a totally different beast. The contrast of a smooth, R&B style delivery saying such horrible yet entertaining things was fantastic.
I’ve selected a few of my favorite tracks that Nate Dogg was featured on for your listening pleasure. Rest in peace, Nate: I guess God needed someone to show him how to properly wear a bowling hat with a Lakers jersey.
