The Academy Awards Make Bad Picks For Best Picture

admin February 27, 2012

Goodfellas didn’t win Best Picture. That fact sits atop my “never forget” list, along with the Japanese bombing Pearl Harbor and that time my penis was farted on by a drunk girl.

Nerd Mode: Engaged.

Last night at the 84th annual Academy Awards, The Artist walked away with Best Picture. I’ve never seen The Artist, and I’m sure that I’d find it perfectly enjoyable if I ever did. But I’m sick of movies with little replay value and niche appeal walking away with an award that should be reserved for a film that, 20 years later, people will be enraptured by whether watching it for the first or 50th time.

It's that guy from The King's Speech. Along with that other guy. In this scene, they are doing stuff. I think. Clearly, the movie made an indelible impression upon me.

Last year, The King’s Speech won Best Picture over Inception and Toy Story 3, films that were both more enjoyable and will have a much longer shelf life. The year before, it was The Hurt Locker victorious over Avatar, Inglourious Basterds and Up. Why can’t movies like those win? It’s like a guy feeling he has to pick a different style of woman than those he dates when it comes to marry. If you’re into fresh-off-the-boat Asian chicks, by God, marry a fresh-off-the-boat Asian chick. Yes, your friends (if they’re anything like me) will kid you non-stop about eating dogs and foot binding, but you’ll be happier in the long run.

PS-Speaking of love you long time, someone, please, buy me this.

I agree on your argument. But last night the best movie did win. It was a genius concept and nod to a classic era in film. I saw 6 of the 9 films and “The Artist” was the best (the only 3 I did not see, “Hugo,” “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” and “Tree of Life” would not even hold a candle.)

Here’s the thing that should REALLY rattle your cage: the Weinsteins bought their 2nd straight Oscar. For the second straight year, a non Hollywood movie won the Oscar. Shows me all you gotta do is find that perfect film from overseas, buy it and ride it to Oscar success.
