Mad Men-“Christmas Waltz” Review (Hare Krishna-tastic)

admin May 21, 2012

I love Mad Men's capability to dig up characters you forgot existed. Who the Hell remembered Hare Krishna Private Pyle?

“The twist is that the [people of Planet] Negron are white.”
-Harry Crane

No show understands human desire more thoroughly than Mad Men. Last night’s episode, “Christmas Waltz” (click here to purchase via Amazon) was a showcase of wants and needs, all beautifully written, all painfully believable. I won’t get into the details, because I don’t care to do a plot summary and I have some furious, soul-deadening masturbation to return to, but the episode’s dialogue was perfect, from Harry’s dalliance with a Hare Krishna (HARRY: I’m married. LAKSHMI: I’m burning for you. Does your wife burn for you? HARRY: [pauses for a moment, then shoves his tongue down LAKSHMI’s throat]) to Don and Joan meditating upon infidelity as she’s eyed across the bar by a well-dressed man (JOAN: Who do you think [he has] waiting at home? I bet she’s not ugly. The only sin she’s committed is being familiar.)

If you’ve ever wanted, if you’ve ever desired, more than any church, Mad Men will grant you absolution for your trespasses. I’m forever thankful to the show for that.
